The Silver Age of Comic Books was a period of artistic advancement and commercial success in mainstream American comic books, predominantly those in the superhero genre. I refer to this "modern" era of comic books as being in fact a Stone Age due to the comic book industry's general overall lack of direction (stylistically speaking), mass employment of amateur and / or photo-assisted "comic book artists", overall dismal sales, multiple "reboot" marketing strategies and sales gimmicks (restarting a whole storyline from scratch due to lack of imagination and thereby rendering all previous history as practically "irrelevant"), and in general, fanboy controlled or influenced companies. No longer do the (mainly big) publishers tell the fans what to like and thereby keep quality control out of the hands of primarily entertainment minded readers / buyers; now the fans tell the publishers what's good and bad and thus the level of professionalism in comic book publishing has suffered. Now generic forms of entertainment predominate, completely with a lack of substantial content. This "Stone Age" is showing signs of weakness, namely do to the radical transformation the comic book industry is experiencing do to the Internet and the ability for independent, serious minded creators to self publish relatively cheaply and thereby avoid the fan-controlled traditional comic book publishers altogether, and a better late than never return to realistic comic book illustrations (coming in through the back door of photo-assisted comic book artwork and the large amount of painted covers being published -a nod to Alex Ross' success.)
The New Golden Age of Comic Books
The New Golden Age of Comic Books began in 1994 with the publication of Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek's Marvels. This book wasn't done in the traditional way that comic book were usually created, that is to say it wasn't drawn primarily from the imagination for it relied heavily or almost entirely on photographic references but the effect was to redemonstrate to a comic book publishing industry that had become steeped in sales killing amateur artwork the power of a realistically rendered visual narrative. The resulting imitators of this photo-assisted 'style' of comic books helped usher in an industry wide change in art quality towards the better, bringing it more in line with the original Golden Age of comic books insistence on using artist trained in realistic drawing.
Although comic book print sales still paled compared to the original Golden Age's the return to realistic artwork was only the set-up for the greater boost in sales to come from the introduction of digital comic books available over the newly created Internet. Now digital comic books are selling in the millions of issues and have helped to spark a wider interest in the medium, an interest that was dwindling due to other forms of electronic entertainments' influence on the masses such as video games. With comic books firmly set in the digital world occupied by it's main competitor -the video game, the medium's revenue was set to grow. That revenue itself recieved another hefty boost by another effect of the Internet phenomenon -namely the loss of revenue on motion pictures do to illegal downloading of digital copies of movies.
For years Hollywood executives had been ignoring the untapped potential of the comic book fan base. They refused to make movies en mass using comic book characters and ideas and for that they were unprepared for the huge drop in revenue when entertainment taste turned almost overnight to digital media and the Internet. People clearly preferred to watch movie over the Internet and for free illegally rather than go to and pay at a movie theater.
The widespread exploitation of digital downloading by the masses created a need for Hollywood production studios to compensate for a lack in theater attendance. This need was fulfilled by the creation of more comic book based films. The comic book movie blockbuster could be relied on for bringing in major revenue via the theaters and circumvent / mediate revenues lost due to digital pirating. For fans would much rather see these types of film on the big screen than on a smaller device and in poor quality.
As a consequence of all of these confluences the comic book industry is now enjoying a second Golden Age. But it's a lot larger than that. This Golden Age is actually widespread over all visually oriented artistry and sciences and could only be called a Golden Age of Visual Storytelling. From web comic books to the new field of virtual reality the future is set for visual storytelling to take off like a rocket ship and never look back.
